I. Safety Renovation

Due to the toxicity of ammonia and the significant risks it poses to personnel, any leakage in an ammonia refrigeration system can have severe consequences. Consequently, regulatory oversight of ammonia systems is subject to even stricter requirements. To enhance the safety of ammonia refrigeration systems, the company has introduced the following solutions.

1. Install an emergency shut-off valve: An emergency shut-off valve shall be installed on the ammonia supply piping to ensure that the refrigerant ammonia supply is promptly cut off in the event of a system leak, thereby preventing a large-scale ammonia release.

2. Spraying: A spray system is installed above the ammonia system’s liquid receiver; in the event of an ammonia leak, the spray system automatically activates to neutralize the leaked ammonia and mitigate the impact of the incident.

Refrigerant leaks are a significant safety concern not only in ammonia-based refrigeration systems but also in fluorocarbon systems and other types of refrigeration systems. To enhance the safety of ammonia-based refrigeration systems, the company has concurrently introduced the following solutions.

1. Exhaust ventilation and leak alarm: Install an emergency exhaust fan and a gas concentration detector in the computer room’s cooling system to ensure timely activation in the event of a refrigerant leak, thereby minimizing the impact of such incidents.

2. Pipeline valve replacement: Timely repair or replacement of refrigeration system piping and valves that have reached the end of their service life, are in poor condition, or have been in use for an extended period is essential to reduce the risk of safety incidents.

III. System Renovation

Ammonia-to-fluorine conversion: According to GB 18218, the Standard for Identification of Major Hazard Sources of Dangerous Chemicals, a refrigeration system containing 10 metric tons or more of refrigerant is classified as a major hazard source. One solution to this issue is to replace the refrigerant with a safer, non-toxic fluorocarbon.

IV. Reducing the Refrigerant Charge

To address the significant safety risks posed by the large refrigerant charge in ammonia-based refrigeration systems and to prevent the creation of major hazard sources, we offer customers ammonia-reduction retrofit solutions.

1. Ammonia electronic expansion valve liquid supply technology:

By replacing the pump-based liquid supply with a high-precision electronic expansion valve, the amount of refrigerant charged can be reduced by more than 80%.

2. High-pressure float-type liquid supply technology:

The condenser employs float-based liquid drainage, eliminating the need for a system receiver; ammonia charge is reduced by more than 90%.

3. Local Gravity-Based Liquid Supply Technology:

High-pressure ammonia liquid is delivered to the cooling terminals by means of a pressure differential, and the evaporator liquid level is then controlled via a liquid-level controller, resulting in a reduction of more than 60% in the system’s ammonia charge.

4. The gas-liquid separator is changed to a U-tube configuration:

Replacing the gas–liquid separator in the chilled-water unit of the refrigeration system with a U-tube can significantly reduce the refrigerant charge.

5. The horizontal liquid receiver in the refrigeration system is changed to a vertical liquid receiver:

Under the same liquid-level requirement, the refrigerant charge in a vertical storage tank is lower.
